And the move is serious, Peter Parker has been killed off in the latest issue,Ultimate Spider-Man #160 edition and a black Spidey is the replacement.
Well, not exactly just black. The new spiderman is half-black, half-hispanic kid named Miles Morales and will be replacing the very caucasian Peter Parker who lives a double life as a reporter by day and then Spideman by night according to Marvel Entertainment. I must say that this is a shocking move in Marvel knocking off Peter Parker seeing that the franchise recently named Andrew Garfield as the new Spidey and is staring in the latest blockbuster of the Spiderman franchise .
This is no doubt a big move in replacing the ethnic background of a superhero to another ethnic group. It seems like Marvel is trying to be more diversed, open-minded, experimental, whatever you want to call it, but I am not sure how well this big change up will go down on the big screen. I do like the idea that Marvel is looking to expand our minds in thinking out of the box, but the thing is, Peter Parker and Spiderman upon their creation were built a certain way that has been ingrained in our minds, I am just having a difficult time in seeing this new culturally different Spidey adjusting well on the big platform.
And if your worried as I am about the new spiderman being all ghetto and the entire theme of the franchise being altered, don’t worry, all is going to be kept the same according to the writer.
Here is what writer Brian Michaels Bendis for Spiderman said to USA today:
“The theme is the same: with great power comes great responsibility. He’s going to learn that. Then he has to figure out what that means.”
Well, that part is a relief, because I like the character as it is. Giving us a new spidey with a new ethnic background is already enough to take, imagine if they were altering the entire creation of Spiderman. Would not go down well. Now, all I am trying to picture is what African American actor in Hollywood would fit well into the new role of Spiderman. Obviously it would have to be someone on the slim, athletic side. Is there really anyone, or do you think Marvel will have to get a no-name actor to star as the new Spidey
