It’s not the first time we have heard people outside of the music industry and within voice their concerns in how degrading the lyrical content being belted out in disrespectful forms by rappers are against women, but listening to Steve Harvey’s view on the matter is an eye opener. Harvey is the latest celebrity to speak on the state of Hip Hop, the master piece and his dislike of how disrespectful some of the lyrics can be to women. Here is what Harvey had to say in an interview with MTV News:
“Hip-hop is a beautiful thing,” he said. “I think that the music genre itself has create more millionaires than any other music genre before it, especially in our community.”
And he continues:
“I think that we as the African American men in hip-hop, we have a greater responsibly because we have the ears of so many millions of our young people,” he said. “And they listenin’.”
More from Harvey :
“We got to stop the disrespect of our women in our music,” Harvey said. “We the only ones that do it. Japanese people don’t do it. Rock ‘n’ rollers don’t do it. Jewish people don’t do it. You know, Latino men don’t do it. Cubans don’t do it they music. Mexicans don’t do it in they music. I ain’t ever heard no Swedish group do it. Why we so hateful towards ourself,[sic] towards our sisters?”
What do you think about Steve Harvey’s comments, is he right, should we just view Hip Hop as a form of art or see the messgaes it sends out about women in a negative form as being a serious issue ?
